   HTML tag reference

The ChangeDetection HTML tag enables you the webmaster to:

  • Know how many people were notified of changes to your site,
  • Include a comment in the change notices sent for your site, and
  • Turn off ChangeDetection for certain parts of a page.

    The ChangeDetection HTML tag is an invisible HTML comment tag in the form:

        <!-- ChangeDetection.com id="YourSiteId"
            comment="A comment for your users"
            detection="off/on" -->

    Your pages may include one or more ChangeDetection tags. You may include any combination of the ID, COMMENT, and DETECTION values in each tag. Here's what they do:

    Key Value Description
    ID Your site ID. This ID was e-mailed to you when you signed-up to use ChangeDetection on your site. The site ID lets our system know who is the web master of this site. If a site ID is found, the web master associated with that ID will receive an e-mail each time we notify the website's users of a change. This e-mail will include the time of the notice and how many people we notified, along a copy of the webmaster's comment.
    Comment Text describing the changes you've made to this page since last time. Use this comment to describe the changes you've made to this page since last time. This comment will be included in the e-mails sent to your site's visitors letting them know that your site has changed. (You must also have included your site ID on this page).
    Detection "on" or "off" If you have an area of your page that changes frequently but your visitors should not be notified about it, you can place a ChangeDetection comment before and after that area to switch off detection and then turn it back on. For example, if you automatically generate today's date as part of your page, it's unlikely that your visitors will want to be notified that the date changed. You simply place <!-- ChangeDetection.com detection="off" --> in your HTML before the date, and <!-- ChangeDetection.com detection="on" --> after the date.

  • Example 1: Receiving an email when people are notified of a change to your page
    To receive an email informing you of how may people where notified of a page change, simply include a tag like this anywhere on the page:
    <!-- ChangeDetection.com id="YourId" -->
    Remember to change the "YourId" value to your actual site ID that was sent to you when you signed up on our home page.

    Example 2: Including a message to the people that are notified of a page change
    To include a brief message in the emails that are sent to the people monitoring your page for changes, include a tag similar to this anywhere on the page:
    <!-- ChangeDetection.com id="YourId" comment="Your message here" -->
    Remember to change the "YourId" value and set the actual message you want.

    Example 3: Ignoring the changes on part of a page
    To ignore the changes on part of a page (for example the page header, nav bar, footer, or an ad that is changed continuously) use the following two tags as illustrated:
      ...stuff to monitor for changes...
    <!-- ChangeDetection.com detection="off" -->
      ...stuff to ignore...
    <!-- ChangeDetection.com detection="on" -->
      ...stuff to monitor for changes...

    It is strongly recommended that you do this for parts of your page that change daily, so your visitors aren't irritated with too-frequent notices they quickly learn to ignore.
